Recent Graphic Novel Reads #2

A while ago, I did a round-up of the graphic novels I had read recently. Since I’ve been loving so many recently, I decided to do another round-up of all my favorite graphic novels (+ one manga) since then!

FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST

I read this entire 27 volume series at work in the last two weeks…it was so good! I had seen both anime series based on this manga, so I knew I loved it, but I had never gotten around to reading the manga even though I owned it in it’s entirety. This series had me laugh and crying and everything in between. There are so many tragic things that happen, but the characters are truly a delight to go on a journey with. I highly recommend this!

STARGAZING

This story was so cute, but so emotional at the same time. It is definitely a middle grade story, but I found it so charming and I absolutely loved it! I think in my previous post I had said that I don’t love Jen Wang’s art style, but I want to take that back! It has definitely grown on me and I love the stories she tells.

CHECK, PLEASE!

The first volume of Check, Please! was on my initial list, but the second and final volume has come out and it was so good! I love how this volume wrapped up the story. The two volumes cover four years, so some developments seem a little fast, but it was so cute overall! It definitely put me in the mood for some pie 🙂

HEARTSTOPPER

This series was also in my original post, but now there is another volume out! I absolutely adore the casual art style of this series and it’s a really cute story while also tackling harder topics. I could reread this series over and over!

AQUICORN COVE

Katie O’Neill’s soft stories and colorful art really are an absolute favorite of mine! Her stories are calm, but still really meaningful. In this book in particular, she has a message in the back about protecting our oceans and a whole section on what is happening and how we can help.

THE TEA DRAGON FESTIVAL

This is a companion to The Tea Dragon Society, which was on my original list. This book is a fair amount longer, but I loved it so much! I want to live in a world that Katie O’Neill has created.

My Favorite Female Authors!

Happy International Women’s Day! To celebrate, I wanted to chat about some of my favorite female authors! To be honest, most of the books I read are by women, so most of my favorite authors are women, but they still deserve a shoutout.

There are definitely more that I could have added to this list, but I wanted to include only authors that I’ve read multiple books/series from.

CHRISTINA LAUREN

I have read 10 of Christina Lauren’s books and honestly, they are hit or miss for me. Looking back, I have loved less of them than I’ve disliked, but still, the ones I’ve loved are absolute favorites of mine. Their books don’t feel formulaic to me, so each book stands out in my mind. I can’t wait for the release of The Honey Don’t List later this month!

AKEMI DAWN BOWMAN

I was drawn to Starfish initially for the cover, but the main character ended up being very relatable to me because of her social anxiety. I loved the book and all the other issues that were dealt with. Her second book, Summer Bird Blue, was quite different than her first, but was so emotional. I just adore both of these books and I can’t wait to read anything and everything she writes in the future!

TAYLOR JENKINS REID

I’ve loved every book that I’ve read by Taylor Jenkins Reid, starting from when I read The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. She comes up with such heart-wrenching ideas for her stories and they always impact me.

ALICE OSEMAN

I broke my rule with Alice Oseman, since I have only read Heartstopper from her, but I just love it so much. It is so pure and heartwarming and I love it so much. Eventually, I would love to read some of her proper novels.

MARGARET ROGERSON

Both of Margaret Rogerson’s books were just such enjoyable reads! She does standalone fantasy so well and I love the worlds and characters she creates. I don’t know what she has planned in the future, but I will read it for sure.

LAINI TAYLOR

Laini is the queen of beautiful writing! Thinking about Strange The Dreamer still does things to my heart. I’ve read both of her series, and while I didn’t love the end of the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, she is still an exceptional writer and her stories stay with me.

LEIGH BARDUGO

Leigh Bardugo is another author where I don’t necessarily love everything she’s written. The Shadow and Bone series wasn’t for me (though I have been feeling like rereading it lately…) and King of Scars was one of the most disappointing books I read in 2019, but I love Six of Crows. I think I will continue to read anything she comes out with.

SARAH J. MAAS

It feels controversial to have Sarah J. Maas be among my favorite authors, but truly, I love her books. They are fun and addicting and mean a lot to me. I’ve read and loved pretty much everything she’s written and now that I have House of Earth and Blood in my possession I can’t wait to dive in!

Recent Graphic Novel Reads!

I have read quite a few graphic novels lately, but I haven’t figured out how I want to incorporate them into my blog. I doesn’t feel right to do a whole review on them, so I decided to do a round-up type of post instead, featuring all of the graphic novels I’ve read lately. Good thing they’ve all been amazing!

Check, Please!

This hockey-based graphic novel took me by surprise! I don’t like hockey, but it follows a hockey-playing, pie-baking, vlog-making young man nicknamed Bitty. He is the absolute cutest! It follows his freshman and sophomore years at college. It is in a vignette style, but everything is connected and in chronological order. I really like the art style as well!

Fence

I think this is my least favorite of the graphic novels I’ve read, but I am eagerly awaiting the release of the third volume this month! It is all about a fencing team at a boy’s school. So far, the two released volumes have not covered much time, so we get to see a lot of what happens in a couple days. I was originally drawn to this one because of the art style!

Heartstopper

Yet another graphic novel that features sports, but this time, rugby! The art in this one is all black and white, which I ended up loving. The style overall is pretty casual. The story is absolutely adorable! Nick and Charlie are the absolute cutest!

The Tea Dragon Society

I think this is technically marketed as a kid’s book, but oh man, it is so cute! The art style is nice and cute and story is also super cute. It is a little short, so I do wish it was longer! I can’t get enough of it though, and I want my own tea dragon.

The Prince and The Dressmaker

The art style of this one is not my favorite, but the story is so sweet! I think this is the only one on the list that is just one volume, but it is on the longer side. I think it explores some important things and it is so fun. It definitely had me tearing up!

What are some graphic novels you love? I’m always looking for more cute ones like these!
