Hi! So I recently said that I wanted to include content warnings in every book that I review after adding them to my review for The Family Upstairs. This has always been an important issue to me, because I have been blindsided by content that I wasn’t expecting and could have prepared myself for if I had known about it.
I will be checking every book against this list, but I’m sure there will be things outside this list for specific books.
The List:
- abuse
- animal cruelty
- cancer
- cheating
- drugs
- eating disorders
- graphic sex*
- grief
- hate groups
- homophobia
- incest
- mental illness
- non-consensual
- pedophilia
- prostitution
- racism
- self-harm
- sexual assualt
- suicide
- stalking
- war
*I haven’t decided yet if I will include that warning for romance novels since I feel like that’s expected of the genre…let me know what you think though!
With these, I will include more specific information for each book. This could include things like mentioned but not shown or specific subcategories under each.
If I ever leave something out of a review or you want something added to this list, please let me know! I want this to be as helpful as possible. I will have this post linked on my sidebar so it’s easy to check back and see what I’m keeping an eye out for.

I personally like to have content warmings and do add them myself to my reviews. It’s completely up to you whether you want to share any warnings or info on the content involved but I do know that some people have liked me informing them of strong language in books, particularly if it’s really frequent. And as for romance novels, well I think there are some romance novels that feature a lot of sex and some that are just like cozy romances and feature none so it would make a difference to some people knowing which type of romance they’re reading. But that’s just based on what I’ve experienced through letting people know about that stuff. 🙂

Hi there, so happy to have found your blog. I’m looking forward to chatting books with you and I LOVE this post. I’m also thinking of adding some content warnings to my reviews, but don’t know yet how exactly I’ll be doing it. Having a list like yours is a great idea!!

Hi and thank you!! When I was thinking about it, a list seemed like the easiest way to not forget any thing.

I think it’s a great idea to compare the book with the list, as you said it will help you remember everything.
